G major scale lesson part 1

Understanding the scale (with charts and exercises)

What is a  scale?

A scale is a series of notes within an octave.

What is the Major scale?

The Major (or Ionian) scale uses the following formula –

Whole step – whole step -half step – whole step – whole step – whole step – half step.

if you play on Just the low E string a whole step is equal to two frets (2 semitones) and a half step is equal to one fret. (1 semitone)

Below are the notes for the C major scale – see if you can understand the method above by playing the notes of the c major scale.

1.C

2.D

3.E

4.F

5.G

6.A

7.B

Finish on C

The notes are numbered 1- 7 .

Now here is the Major Scale in Every Key

C = C – D – E – F – G – A – B – C
D = D – E – F# – G – A – B – C# – D
E = E – F# – G# – A – B – C# – D# – E
F = F – G – A – Bb – C – D – E – F
G = G – A – B – C – D – E – F# – G
A = A – B – C# – D – E – F# – G# – A
B = B – C# – D# – E – F# – G# – A# – B
C# = C# – D# – E# (=F) – F# – G# – A# – B# (=C) – C#
Db = Db – Eb – F – Gb – Ab – Bb – C – Db
Eb = Eb – F – G – Ab – Bb – C – D -Eb
F# = F# – G# – A# – B – C# – D# – E# (=F) – F#
Gb = Gb – Ab – Bb – Cb (=B) – Db – Eb – F – Gb
Ab = Ab – Bb – C – Db – Eb – F – G – Ab
Bb = Bb – C – D – Eb – F – G – A – Bb

Look at the chart attached for The G major scale and learn position 1 today and in lesson 2 we will go into more depth.

See attached the G major scale PDF –
