Here at The Guitar School we love all types of music.  With Metal music however there are certain techniques that crop up again and again.  If you learn.the following techniques you are on your way to becoming a metal master!!

1. alternate Picking

Alternate picking is atechnique where you pluck a string up then down continuously.  It is useful for machine gun like fast runs.  A big tip is moving the pick as little as possible thus allowing more srokes in a quicker time.

Legato means to play smoothly.  Legato playing is great for fast runs up and down the neck.  The trick is to pluck less and basically let the left hand produce hammer ons and pull offs to give the sound of notes.

3. Sweep picking

When sweep picking, the guitarist plays single notes on consecutive strings with a ‘sweeping’ motion of the pick, while using the fret hand to produce a specific series of notes that are fast and fluid in sound.

This is essentially a very metal concept.

4. Tapping

Tapping involveshammering down on the fretboard with either the left or right hand to produce note sounds.

In rock and metal music finger tapping is often done with both hands at once or most commonly with the right hand tapping notes high up the fretboard.

5. palm Muting

What Great Metal band ddoesn’t use this at some point?  Essentially the right hand palm rests on the strings (you have to find the sweetshop) to give a specific sound to your notes.
